our roots

We’re Aaron and Rose, the co-founders, and the owners of Plata Coffee. We founded Plata Coffee to provide a space for our community to create, share, and grow together. Over the last three years we have learned everything we can about this industry, and how we can use coffee to connect with our neighbors in the process.

In our spare time, Aaron is an intern architect with a focus in sustainable design, and I work both behind the bar and behind the scenes at Plata to make sure everything runs smoothly. Our days are never predictable, but we relish in the challenge that is small business ownership!

We are proud to create an environment where every single person feels welcome and supported — from our team of talented baristas, to the local roasters we work with, and to those just passing through. We are delighted to be able to make this our life’s work.

Aaron is most likely to: be able to fix any piece of equipment behind the bar in record time (with a little help from google).

Rose is most likely to: juggle endless shop tasks while simultaneously balancing in kitchen clogs.

Nice to know you! I’m Amanda Turpin (she/her). I’m Plata Coffee’s manager and like to think of myself as its espresso high priestess and mad scientist.

Over the last 17 years I’ve enjoyed the unique opportunity to work in a variety of roles in New Mexico’s coffee industry; from barista, wholesale supplier, coffee educator, and independent cafe consultant.

With each role, I have grown in my devotion for the craft and love for the people who produce coffee, from its cultivation to its service.

One of my favorite things about working at Plata Coffee is our guest roaster program, which allows us to showcase some really special local offerings. But most of all, I’m passionate about equipping anyone who is remotely curious about coffee with the skills they need to brew their best cup, and work together to source coffee in more ethical ways.

Amanda is most likely to: share a weird historical fact or wax poetic about Aeropress.
